JULY 2026
Summer in Szászberek
I’m currently at the airport waiting for my Budapest to Paris flight. Hopefully this time all goes well!
I was so busy during my week in Hungary that I barely had the time or energy to post much.
However, before I leave, I want to make sure I give a more detailed report about my day long visit to Szászberek, Hungary.
Szászberek is where Adolf and Helen Kohner had their large countryside estate. In addition to hosting extended Kohner family relatives, they would often host and support a variety of well known artists, including Béla Bartok.
There were many wonderful experiences throughout the day, but some of the particular highlights included an amazing homemade lunch (much better than a lunch I had later in the week at a trendy Budapest restaurant), getting to see the wine cellar and basement of the “Kohner castle,” (and learning that all the basement tiles and water pipes were made of Zsolnay porcelain—unfortunately all long gone), and being hosted by the Szászberek historical society.
We were also brought to the home of a local resident who has a painting of one of Adolf Kohner’s horses. It was painted by the Hungarian painter, Aladar Edvi Illes (1870-1958). It is for sale.
We visited with the mayor of Szaszberek who mentioned that if any Kohner descendant would like, we are more than welcome to build a small house by the former swimming pool and use it when we visit. While I love it the idea, unfortunately probably not very practical.
All in all, it was a lovely, welcoming and extremely interesting visit!

Zoltán Szarvák and his family (as well as many Szászberek residents), hosted me, Moser Maria, and Janet Borsos for a lovely day of learning, eating, and strengthening connections.
